Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and
Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Mr Ekpo Nta, yesterday said
the agency had a court order to prosecute illegal degree awarding
universities in the country.
Nta disclosed this during the 22nd annual
International Conference on African Literature and English language
(ICALEL) on corruption and national security which took place at the
University of Calabar.
He warned Nigerians students seeking to further their
studies to beware of such institutions which he said are 67 in number,
and called on prospective students to visit the National University
Commission (NUC) website for names and addresses of such illegal
institutions.
Nta reiterated that the ICPC would soon move against
those illegal universities, their vice-councilors, and, therefore,
called on Nigerians to be fully involved in the fight against crime,
insecurity and corruption.
“As a matter of fact, two universities in Nigeria
have indicated interest to run degree programmes on anti corruption.
They are going through accreditation process and hopefully they would be
fully operational by next academic session,” he said.
Also speaking, the Head of English and Literary
Studies Department of the university, Dr Stella
Ansa, advised African
writers to author books that would tackle the menace of insecurity and
issue of corruption.
